Mountaintop removal mining is a terrible environmental tragedy for our
country.
Hundreds of bare, flattened mountaintops in Appalachia are a hideous
reminder of what was once gloriously beautiful, and nearby streams, filled
with dumped debris, are clogged and toxic. Biologically diverse forests have
been clear-cut and the wildlife dependent on them has been wiped out.
We must stop this ruinous strip mining practice of the coal companies and
invest in clean, renewable energy sources.
Passage of S. 696, the bipartisan Appalachian Restoration Act, will end the
destruction caused by mountaintop removal mining.
